The Top 12 Tips to Create the Perfect Men’s Suit

Finding the right suit can be a headache and at the very worst a frustrating experience. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to make this process less complicated and more pleasant. At 3 Day Suit Broker, we believe that suit shopping should be hassle free and a great experience. Here are some helpful tips we put together to help you make an amazing first impression!

  1.  Make sure it fits

When looking for the perfect suit the most important factor is a good fit. The suit should follow the contours of your body. If you’re wearing a suit that’s even one size to big, you’ll look lazy and appear as if you don’t care about your appearance. If you wear a suit that’s too tight, you’ll look unprofessional and won’t be comfortable since your outfit will restrict your movements. It’s all about finding the perfect balance.

Remember, first impressions are everything. According to Business Insider, you only have 7 seconds to make a strong first impression. This means looking sharp and being dressed properly is crucial!

  1. Pay attention to the length

Follow the “half-inch of linen” rule when judging the length of the shirt worn underneath your jacket. The proper length will display the shirt cuff exceeding the jacket cuff by a half an inch. For a majority of men this means the jacket sleeve will end right above the large bone in their wrist (Reference point C on the image above). When it comes to jacket length the jacket should drop past your waist and should stop at the end of where your buttocks starts to curves back in. Use your hands to check if the jacket hem is correct. If the hemline reaches the middle, or just past, where the palm meets the fingers, then your hemline is correct.

Your trousers should also be at the right length. The hemline should sit on top of your shoe. If your ankles show, your trousers are too short. If your trousers are wrinkled and fall below the heel, your pants are too long. Your trousers should also be a bit spacious in the thigh area (so you don’t look like you’re wearing tights) and tapered from the knee down to the hem. (Reference point E on the image above)

  1. Choose the right fabric

Suits come in a variety of textiles, and each of them has their own pros and cons. However, if you find it hard to choose, the safest option is going with a suit made of wool or a blend of wool and silk.

  1. Invest in the basics

If you’re planning to buy your first high-quality suit, make sure to choose one that’s solid navy or charcoal gray. These two colors are considered to be the basics and should always be present in your wardrobe, since you can wear them almost anywhere. Once you have suits in each color, your next goal should be to buy a black suit or two. These colors are very versatile and appropriate for any business function.

  1. Experiment with different patterns

Once you have the basics, you may want to buy suits in eye-catching patterns. Having one or two playful options can help break the monotony. You can give herringbone, pinstripe, or houndstooth a try, or if you’re feeling bold, you can experiment with a plaid pattern.

  1. Play with colors

Suits must be formal, but this doesn’t mean that you should stick to plain neutral colors. If you’re wearing a navy suit, for instance, you can brighten up your ensemble by wearing mossy green shoes or accessorizing with a pocket square. Avoid matching your pocket square to the pattern or fabric of your tie! Have some fun with your pocket square by adding a pattern or pop of color while still looking polished.

  1. Select your tie wisely

3 Day Suit Broker recommends that you buy your suit, shirt, and tie at the same time. This way, you’ll have a complete outfit that you know will look good on you, and you’ll no longer waste time in the morning trying to find a tie that matches your shirt and suit.

If you’re buying a tie alone, be wise with your choices. You don’t have to stick with plain, boring colors, but avoid ties that are garish and outlandish.

  1. Wear the right shoes

If you don’t have the budget to buy several pairs, opt for black single monk shoes. They’re highly versatile and can be paired with almost any outfit. When you have a bigger budget, you can spice up your wardrobe with tasseled loafers, Chelsea boots, and other formal footwear.

  1. Pick the right time to go sockless

The question is to wear socks or not to wear socks at all? The answer depends on where you’re going and what you’re doing. If you’re wearing a cotton suit and meeting friends for coffee, going sockless is fine. If you’re giving a presentation to business investors, make sure to wear excellent socks. You can have fun with this by choosing a color or pattern, if appropriate.

  1. Find the perfect coat

To maintain the right fit, make sure your jacket is tailored close to your to body to create a clean, streamlined look. You do not want your coat flapping around when unbuttoned. This is a sign your jacket is too big. At the same time, you do not want to see wrinkles radiating outward when buttoning your jacket. This means your jacket it is too tight. (Reference point D on the image above) Also, pay attention to the collar fitting. Your jacket collar should slightly rest against your shirt collar. A warning sign that your collar is too big is if you see a gap. In most cases, a bad collar fit is caused by a larger fit, but it also could mean the neck size is not the correct one for you. Another important area to consider is the fit of the shoulder. When it comes to correct shoulder fitting in your jacket, make sure to look for bunching in the top of your shoulders or if you see the jacket dip-in underneath the shoulder and proceed back out again. This indicates that the shoulders are too big and you do not properly fill out the jacket.  (Reference point A & B on the image above)

  1. Do not over-accessorize

It’s all right to wear cuff links, pocket scarves, and other accessories — but try to do it in moderation. You do not want to appear too “blinged out”. You want to stand out for the right reasons, not the wrong.

  1. Be confident

No matter how fantastic your suit is, it will still be lousy if you don’t look confident while wearing it. So stand up straight and look the part of a professional, because confidence is your best accessory!
