Choose the Right Shoe Color for Your Suit

There’s a science behind picking the right shoes for your suit. In order to make your appearance colorful and lively, you should always put the best colors together.

Since there’s more than one suit color to choose from, there’s obviously more than one shoe color to choose from as well. With the five most common suit colors being brown, black, medium or mid-gray, and navy; for the most part, there are only three basic shoe colors that should be worn with specific suits.

Check out these color patterns for day-to-day dress:

Navy Blue Suits

Pair with:

  • Black shoes
  • Brown shoes
  • Red or burgundy shoes

Since navy suits are usually interchanged for black suits, you have more options when choosing a shoe color. To create a fun look, you can wear red or burgundy shoes.  Brown shoes are great to get a relaxed appearance, while black shoes are typically business dress.

Medium & Light Grey Suits

Pair with:

  • Black shoes
  • Brown shoes
  • Red or burgundy shoes

A medium gray suit is made for a more casual look. Black shoes create a business feel, while brown, red or burgundy shoes give the appearance of a casual/social appearance.

Khaki Suits

Pair with:

  • Brown shoes
  • Red or burgundy shoes
  • Navy shoes

Do not pair with:

  • Black shoes

Khaki is a spring and summer color that you can pretty much pair with anything – except for black. Since the color is so light, it’s typically on the casual side.  But if your office is laid back, you can freely wear your stylish khaki suit.

Charcoal Gray Suits

Pair with:

  • Black shoes
  • Burgundy shoes

Do not pair with:

  • Brown shoes

You should never pair a charcoal gray suit with brown shoes. The shades charcoal gray and brown are too close to pair together.  If you’re going to wear a charcoal gray suit, black and burgundy shoes are your best bet because of the elegance they bring.

Pair with:

Do not pair with:

Black suits are not typically meant for everyday wear. While they can be classy, you can only pair them with black shoes.  If you’ve done your research, you’ll know that people tend to choose a charcoal gray or navy blue suit if they want to go dark.  If you are going to choose a black suit, our advice is to only wear it to a funeral or a strict business occasion.
